  2026 Early Career Reearch Fellowships Scheme (McKenzie, Mary Lugton, and Puzey) (The University of Melbourne)?   Location: Parkville   We are seeking expressions of interest from early career academics for the Early Career Researcher Fellowships Selection Process, which includes the McKenzie, Mary Lugton and Puzey Postdoctoral Fellowships. The fellowship is a period of concentrated research time that enables outstanding early career researchers to strengthen their research, generate new projects and collaborations, develop research leadership capabilities, and contribute to the broader research objectives of the University. Applicants with a PhD from any University, including Melbourne, and Indigenous postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to apply.?   This is a highly competitive opportunity, with up to sixteen McKenzie Fellowships available each year, as well a one each of Mary Lugton Fellowship and Puzey Fellowship . Under the McKenzie Fellowships scheme, the University aims to offer at least two of fellowships annually to high-calibre Indigenous postdoctoral researchers. These fellowships are targeted to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early career researchers and are also open to applications from First Nations people internationally.?     The University will fund a three-year full-time appointment commencing at Level A.6 in the University salary band plus superannuation.? Role 1.?Specialist (HiLife)

This role is fixed-term position for three years.

Your role involves initiating externally funded projects focused on innovation activities, corporate collaboration, and ecosystem development in collaboration with university researchers and external partners. Your responsibilities include active participation in the development of project ideas, building and leading consortia. Additionally, your duties may include project management and implementation of funded projects.

The position requires strong knowledge of funding instruments, especially Horizon Europe (particularly Pillar 2 - Global Challenges and Industrial Competitiveness, and Pillar 3 - Innovative Europe), as well as practical experience in project development. The role will primarily focus on innovation projects and collaborations in the Helsinki Institute of Life Science’s (Hilife) operational units (BU, FIMM, NC).

Successful execution of this role requires the ability to work independently, vision and expertise in creating winning project proposals, a willingness to explore various content areas, and the ability to develop project collaborations with the university's scientific community and external partners.

Role 2. Specialist (Kumpula & Viikki)

This role is permanent position.

Your task is to develop projects funded by external sources (particularly Horizon Europe) that focus on innovation activities, corporate collaboration, and ecosystem development. This will be done in cooperation with university researchers and external partners. Your responsibilities will include actively participating in the refinement of project ideas, building and leading consortia. Additionally, your duties may include project management and implementation of funded projects.

This role will primarily focus on innovation projects and collaborations at the Viikki and Kumpula campuses. Success in this position requires the ability to understand the opportunities and limitations of different research fields to the extent that you can independently handle the necessary aspects of project development. A educational background or work experience in the relevant research fields of these campuses will facilitate this.

Significant project management expertise is required for this position. Experience in service design, familiarity with stakeholder facilitation methods, and knowledge of innovation development methods will be beneficial. Experience in research commercialization and innovation management is an advantage (e.g., previous research commercialization projects or building similar RDI projects). Project preparation work is primarily conducted in English, so fluency in both written and spoken English is essential. Additionally, having an extensive international network in relevant fields will be considered an asset.

Successful execution of this role requires the ability to work independently, a strategic vision for building winning project concepts, a willingness to engage with multiple content areas, and the ability to develop project collaboration between the university's scientific community and external partners.

Job/Project description
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join an interdisciplinary research project focused on understanding the ecological interactions within soil systems, with an emphasis on microbial communities and their role in soil health. The project combines aspects of soil ecology, soil microbiology, and soil biology to explore the dynamic interactions between soil microorganisms, their environment, and nutrient cycling. This position offers a unique opportunity to investigate how soil microorganisms contribute to soil structure, fertility, and ecosystem functions in both natural and managed ecosystems.

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the investigation of several key questions related to soil health and microbial activity, including but not limited to:?
The role of soil microorganisms in nutrient cycling and their impact on soil fertility and plant productivity.?
Investigating how microbial communities contribute to soil structure formation and stability in both disturbed and undisturbed ecosystems.?
Exploring the effects of environmental stressors, on soil microbial dynamics and soil biodiversity.
Analyzing the interactions between soil and microbes and their implications for ecosystem processes.
Key responsibilities:
Conduct advanced research on soil microbial communities using molecular techniques.
Investigate the interactions between soil microbes and their environment using field and laboratory experiments.
Analyze data on soil microbiomes, nutrient cycling, and soil biological processes.
Develop models to predict microbial contributions to soil ecosystem functions under varying environmental conditions.

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in soil ecology, microbiology, soil biology?
Strong background in molecular biology and microbial ecology, with experience in high-throughput sequencing techniques and bioinformatics analysis.
Expertise in soil science, including soil nutrient cycling, soil microbiology, and ecosystem processes. Proven experience in experimental design and data analysis, with proficiency in statistical software.
Experience with soil sampling, laboratory techniques, and field research.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Desired Skills:
Familiarity with advanced microbiome analysis techniques (16S rRNA sequencing, shotgun metagenomics…).

About You

Associate Professor:
