About You

Associate Professor:

The Associate Professor will provide leadership and foster excellence in teaching and research efforts of the School, within the University, and with the community, professional, commercial and industrial sectors. More specifically, the Associate Professor is responsible for providing original, innovative and distinguished contributions to the School's programs for maintaining and advancing their scholarly, research and/or professional capabilities relevant to this discipline at a national and international level.

The Associate Professor will also teach and make a significant contribution to teaching and learning in the discipline with the aim of improving learning outcomes for students. The Associate Professor will make a significant contribution to the planning and strategic direction of the School, taking on academic leadership roles involving participation in various committees within the School, College and University and external to the University, as appropriate. The Associate Professor may be appointed as Deputy Head of School/Dean for a specific discipline or to provide strategic leadership for learning and teaching or research and scholarship.

Senior Lecturer:

The Senior Lecturer will contribute to the teaching and research efforts of the School. The incumbent is to make a significant contribution to the delivery of programs and to be actively involved in research, consulting and other professional activities. The Senior Lecturer will develop, engage in and lead high quality research projects that are aligned with the University's research focus areas to achieve success in attracting research funding and to produce high quality outputs. The Senior Lecturer will have an important research leadership role in embedding their research expertise into the life of the School and will be required to develop high-quality, productivity-driven networks across RMIT and with local, national and global, internal and external partners. The Senior Lecturer may have responsibility for program management.

To be successful for Level D, you'll have as a minimum:


	Demonstrated ability to direct an award program/s and implement program improvements and innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement programs.
	Nationally recognised research track record including substantial record of research outputs in high quality outlets and emerging international recognition in supply chain management.
	Extensive experience in research leadership with the ability to build and develop collaborative research teams, mentor academic staff to deliver high quality outcomes, attract and secure external research funding to sustain research effort, manage funded research projects including complex budgets and reporting requirements.
	Extensive experience in supervising higher degree by research candidates to maximise research performance.
	Demonstrated ability to lead scholarly development and manage and supervise academic teams and members.
	Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to financial, governance and quality management systems within a university.
	Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills including the ability to consult with senior executives, external bodies, produce executive reports, negotiate agreed directions, outcomes and targets within a collaborative environment.
	Proven ability as an effective member of a management team that develops and achieves shared goals and objectives.
	An in-depth knowledge of Supply Chain Analytics, including mathematical modelling, optimisation, and/or machine learning, and/or decision sciences.
	Advanced expertise in developing supply chain solutions using Python, optimisation libraries (e.g., CPLEX, Gurobi), and/or machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).


To be successful for Level C, you'll have as a minimum:


	Demonstrated ability to coordinate large courses and prepare and delivery programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, including high quality curriculum and program materials and ability to implement innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement. An ability to manage a large program or a number of small programs.
	Demonstrated ability to support student issues related to effective learning and extensive experience in supervising higher degree by research candidates to maximise research performance.
	Emerging nationally recognised research track record including substantial record of research outputs in high quality outlets.
	Extensive experience in research leadership with the ability to build and develop collaborative research teams, mentor academic staff to deliver high quality outcomes, attract and secure external research funding to sustain research effort and manage funded research projects including complex budgets and reporting requirements.
	Demonstrated ability to manage academic program team, supporting scholarly development of less experienced academic staff and a demonstrated understanding of and commitment to financial, governance and quality management systems within a university.

The RNAcious laboratory at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki, is recruiting a doctoral researcher to study how pathogens utilize RNA-based mechanisms to further infection in prokaryotic model organisms.

The RNAcious laboratory, led by Dr Peter Sarin, is at the forefront of exploring RNA-based mechanisms that modulate protein synthesis in response to abiotic and biotic stresses. We utilize state-of-the-art LC-MS and RNA-seq techniques to address significant questions in tRNA biology, for example how post-transcriptional tRNA modification dynamics influences host and pathogen translation during infection, how adaptation of tRNA modification affects neoplastic proliferation, and how tRNA modifications may be utilized to tune translation.

We are looking for a skilled doctoral researcher (PhD student) that will work in a vibrant and international research environment as part of a Research Council of Finland funded project on RNA-mediated pathogenicity mechanisms in prokaryotic models. The successful applicant will work on one of two focus areas: (i) characterizing the role and dynamics of viral RNA-based components during virus infection, or (ii) exploring virus infection-mediated changes in archaeal translation. The project entails collaborative aspects with other teams and universities and will be tailored together with the successful applicant based on their interest and prior experience.

Qualifications

Eligible applicants are required to have an applicable second-cycle university degree, an applicable second-cycle degree from a university of applied sciences, or an applicable education at an institution abroad providing eligibility for equivalent higher education in the country in question. The degree must be in a relevant field of research, such as molecular biology, microbiology and/or virology, biochemistry, genetics, or biotechnology, or provide equivalent skills and knowledge.

Prior experience in microbial characterization, translation studies, RNA-seq, and/or applicable bioinformatics is considered an advantage. Furthermore, successful applicants are expected to be competitive in national and international funding schemes. Good communication skills in English (oral and written) are essential, as are enthusiasm for the topic, strong motivation to learn and adapt new skillsets, and readiness to work with diverse teams.

Position details

A successful candidate will be employed initially on a full time, two-year fixed-term contract starting in September 2024 (or at a later date, by agreement). Upon positive evaluation, the contract may be extended to a total of four years (from the original start date of the position). A six-month trial period applies.

The salary is based on level 2 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities.
