Embracing a rich legacy of education, we are filled with immense pride and anticipation as we celebrate our 44th anniversary. Taking root in Macao, a special administrative region (SAR) of China, City University of Macau (CityU Macau) has served the region for over four decades and is once again innovating its education with the support of data science in this new era of artificial intelligence (AI). We are excited about a brighter future as we strive to become a world-class comprehensive university, emphasizing AI-enhanced interdisciplinary research, teaching, and learning.

44 Years of Legacy: Embracing Advanced Technologies and Social Responsibilities

We have welcomed a wealth of new developments in recent years, including more educational spaces and research resources. In this thriving information era, we are committed to building a smart campus that provides innovative learning experiences for our students from around the globe.

This year marks the 44th anniversary of the founding of CityU Macau, a higher education institution that has inherited the legacy of the University of East Asia—the first university in Macao. Backed by its academic foundation, we are proud to inaugurate a new institute for city development: the Institute of Urban and Sustainable Development, to kick off our anniversary celebrations. Fulfilling our commitment to serve Macao, this institute focuses on urban development and renewal, providing research-based solutions for urban governance, data-driven decision-making mechanisms, smart city applications, and sustainable practices for the city’s enhancement. We are taking the lead in transforming the city while promoting resilience in the AI era to withstand climate change and other societal challenges. We have strong confidence that the establishment of this new institute will enhance our efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of Macao—a UNESCO Historic Centre and a unique place where Eastern and Western cultures meet.

Another highlight that marks our 44th anniversary is the opening of the Academy of Seniors. According to World Bank reports, Macao’s population enjoys one of the highest life expectancies in the world. This new hub provides learning opportunities for the local senior community, allowing them to interact meaningfully with society while pursuing joy and knowledge through continuous education. It is a charitable project led by faculty members on a volunteer basis to promote active aging and an opportunity for the CityU Macau community to give back to society.

“In a world increasingly shaped by connectivity, our vision is to create a higher education hub that emphasizes ‘Macao’s Characteristics, China’s Soul, and Global Vision.’ Our mission is to develop market-driven disciplines and nurture practical professionals equipped with hands-on skills and a solid knowledge foundation, enabling them to thrive in this ever-changing social landscape,” says Professor Jun Liu, Rector of CityU Macau and expert in applied linguistics and second language acquisition and teaching.

Empower AI Education for ALL and Interdisciplinary Research

Tapping into a society with an increasing integration of smart technologies, we are planning an AI general education course for all students. Led by Professor Zhou Wanlei, Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) and Dean Faculty of Data Science, in curriculum design, this new initiative not only helps students sharpen the necessary skills for tomorrow’s job market but also enhances their readiness for further interdisciplinary education.

Research has always been a core component of higher education institutions. Thanks to the united efforts of all faculty, we are proud to present excellent interdisciplinary research findings that serve society in various aspects. In the academic year 2023/2024, our total number of paper publications has doubled compared to the same period last academic year, with many published in internationally recognized journals. In addition, CityU Macau has a strong industry network. Many industry-academic initiatives have resulted in cutting-edge technologies and research that transcend subject boundaries, such as cultural heritage conservation, fintech, cloud computing, deep learning, machine unlearning, applied linguistics, and social sciences.

Digital Management Enable Effective Teaching and Learning

Embracing real-time technologies, CityU Macau has adopted a new online platform starting this academic year to manage teaching and learning activities. The system provides real-time statistics, such as class schedules and student attendance, as well as student records, allowing relevant stakeholders to monitor progress and enhance educational experience. Currently, we are exploring ways to integrate AI models into the online platform to further improve its functionalities. This integration aims to support personalized learning, interactive virtual tutoring, automated administrative tasks, enhanced engagement, and data-driven insights. Our goal is to drive innovations in management models and services, freeing faculty and students from repetitive tasks so they can focus on innovation and creativity.

Taking Root in Macao, Promoting Internationalization

From its visionary development plans and international recruitment strategies to its curriculum design and in-depth interdisciplinary integration, CityU Macau strives for internationalization from top-down to ground-up in all aspects, facilitating its engagement with the world and building an open environment for international education. To this end, CityU Macau actively visited higher education institutions and education agencies in Australia, Portugal, Malaysia, Brazil, and Japan recently, resulting in the signing of multiple cooperation agreements and fostering active connectivity in academic exchange and talent mobility across regions. While introducing new opportunities for our students and faculty, we promote Chinese culture to the world, helping others understand China through us and Macao.

In addition, we have been actively responding to the development Macao’s “1+4” strategy for appropriate economic diversification, driving the construction of frontier and interdisciplinary subjects underpinned by data science and big data technologies. It has developed plans in five key areas: data science, fintech, health and wellness, applied linguistics and intercultural communication, and city development and tourism, while also fostering in-depth industry-academia collaboration and facilitating the effective translation of knowledge into practical applications. These efforts have greatly enhanced the social impact of CityU Macau and contributed to the University’s wisdom and strength in supporting the city’s socio-economic development.

We understand that 44 years may be a fraction of global higher education history, but it encapsulates the entire journey of Macao’s tertiary education. Going forward, CityU Macau remains humble yet ambitious in its pursuit of expansion and growth, shouldering its social responsibility while serving society through our commitment to educational and research excellence. In this new era, we are dedicated to “innovation” in all aspects, emphasizing advanced interdisciplinary subjects with the integration of AI, data science, and big data to better meet the needs of our community and beyond.
