Video: Brexit and Trump have ‘had an impact’ on Canada’s attractiveness

The political environments in the UK and US have helped Canada increase its global diversity of talent, Gilles Patry, executive director of the U15 group of research universities has said.

In an interview with John Gill, editor of Times Higher Education, the former president of the University of Ottawa said that the group hasn’t directly measured the number of people coming to Canada after being dissuaded by Brexit or Trump anti-immigration rhetoric, but said that many Canada Research Chairs have come from Europe and the US.

Even though Canada’s welcoming immigration policies and popular prime minister might be the envy of universities outside the country, he added that higher education providers in Canada are also dealing with budget cuts and wavering public trust.
