As tens of thousands of students in England receive their A-level results this week, the annual scramble for university places for those who miss their grades, known as clearing, begins.
After last year’s results day, 345 universities had more than 34,000 courses available through clearing and 57,100 students were accepted on to courses through the clearing process.
