Federation University Australia was created in 2014 when the former University of Ballarat and Gippsland Campus of Monash University merged. The university dates back to 1870, when it began as the School of Mines Ballarat.
The university is Victoria’s largest education institution, with seven campuses in total: Mt Helen, SMB, Camp Street, Gippsland, Wimmera, Berwick, and Brisbane.
Federation University Australia offers courses at undergraduate, post-graduate, TAFE, higher level diploma and apprenticeship levels. Undergraduate and post-graduate courses can be taken in the following faculties: allied health; arts, humanities and social science; business; education; engineering; IT; nursing; occupational health and safety; performing arts; psychology; science and mathematics; sport and visual art.
From 2019, the university began offering free TAFE courses to local students for the jobs most in demand by Victorian employers, with costs covered by the government. Free TAFE courses can be taken in agriculture, automotives, building, cookery and hairdressing.
Students at Federation University Australia have access to several clubs and societies, sporting clubs including the elite athlete program, FedMoves, and AFL club (football). There’s also FedPress, the student publication that students are able to write for. Other societies include medieval battle club, nursing, and stone cutting among others.
Students have several off and on-campus volunteering opportunities to help the local community and student body. There’s a student senate at Federation University Australia, meeting every month to act upon issues shared by students.
Notable alumni include former Victorian Premier Steve Bracks, Olympian Steve Moneghetti, and Vegemite inventor Cyril Callister.
Federation University Australia also deems research to be of a high importance.
