Prime minister Tony Blair this week hosted a soirée for higher education. Some 200 people attended the Downing Street event, the theme of which was excellence in higher education. A guest list devised, apparently, by No. 10 policy wonk Andrew Adonis ensured that noses were put out of joint as certain vice-chancellors were omitted in favour of their more junior staff.
