Sir, - I have seen Muriel Spark's letter to you (June 19).

She is absolutely right: her religious background is none of my business. I am not in the least bit interested in whether she is Jewish, Christian or Hindu. I was telephoned by a journalist who asked my opinion on the matter and in reply I tried to recall what my mother had told me. My mother may have got it wrong.

I find this whole matter extremely tedious and I wish everybody concerned would shut up.
