Six vice-chancellors from the ranks of middle and senior management may seem an impressive record for the University of Southampton a mere 60 years on from its royal charter, but sub specie aeternitatis it has serious competition. Germany's University of Regensburg, founded in 1962, has already had a former pro vice-chancellor proclaimed Pope Benedict XVI.
