Given that the University of the Highlands and Islands is to offer a degree in professional golf (“Professional golf degree launched in Scotland”, www.timeshighereducation.co.uk, 21 January), it is surely time to offer a similar course on cricket. Not only are the laws of cricket an important social and historical research area, but, as C. L. R James’ Beyond a Boundary underlined, there are also important questions of race and anti-imperialism to consider. Then there is the much-debated philosophical question of whether or not pitches should be left uncovered before play starts. One sees not only first degrees but also PhDs in this area.
